About Montsuki Haori Hakama (Groom’s Formal Kimono)

The montsuki haori hakama (紋付羽織袴) is the most formal Japanese groom’s attire — the equivalent of a Western tuxedo or morning suit. The name combines three components: montsuki (crested kimono), haori (over-jacket), and hakama (pleated divided trousers). When worn together with five family crests (mon) visible on the haori, it forms the most ceremonial men’s attire in Japan.

Kuro-montsuki vs iro-montsuki

There are two formal variants of montsuki haori hakama:

• Kuro-montsuki haori hakama (黒紋付羽織袴) — the all-black formal version. The haori is black habutae silk with five white crests; the hakama is striped grey-and-black sendai-hira. The most formal groom’s attire, traditionally paired with the bride’s shiromuku.
• Iro-montsuki haori hakama (色紋付羽織袴) — the coloured version (grey, navy, deep brown, or rarely white) with crests on the haori. Slightly less formal than kuro-montsuki but a popular pairing with the bride’s iro-uchikake.

For couples shooting both shiromuku and iro-uchikake in one session, many choose to also wear both kuro-montsuki (with shiromuku) and iro-montsuki (with iro-uchikake) for visual harmony.

The seven pleats of the hakama

The hakama is constructed with seven pleats — five at the front, two at the back — each carrying a symbolic Confucian virtue: integrity, courage, courtesy, wisdom, sincerity, justice, and benevolence. It is one of the most quietly meaningful details of traditional Japanese formal wear.
